Cool, calm and compact Small sedans with turbocharged engines and all-wheel-drive grip usually come from Japan, have names such as Evo and STi, and rear wings that could have escaped from a surf shop. But not Volvo's S40 T5 AWD. Its understated 17-inch alloys and low-profile Pirelli rubber leave a less-than-sporty gap to the wheel arches. And its boot-mounted lip spoiler is barely detectable, let alone something that could tempt Kelly Slater. But that's Volvo, isn't it? Even when it builds a sporting car, it has to keep a cool, calm perspective. It's not actually a new car at all; more a derivation. The latest generation S40 has been in Australia since June 2004. The T5 was part of the launch range but as a front-wheel-drive version priced at $59,950. Since January the T5 has gone all-wheel-drive, courtesy of a computer-controlled Haldex electro-mechanical coupling that sends torque to the rear wheels when needed. Static drive is 95 per cent front-wheel-drive, swinging as far as 95 per cent rear depending on conditions. The features list has also improved, with heated front seats, a self-dimming interior mirror, six-stacker CD player, 12-speaker sound system and larger 320 mm front disc brakes now standard. That's on top of leather trim, climate control, airbags, stability control and - it is a Volvo, after all - a five-star Euro NCAP rating. With the price dropped to $54,950, Volvo is claiming a value improvement of $9500. With the standard S40 and its V50 wagon equivalent also re-priced, it's no wonder that sales are up 73 per cent compared with last year. The rest of the T5 is largely unchanged. The transverse in-line five-cylinder aluminium engine is still boosted by turbo-charging and air-to-air intercooling. Add variable inlet and exhaust valve timing, and it produces a handy 162 kW at 5000 rpm, and 320 Nm between 1500-4800 rpm. Technical underpinnings are provided by the C1 technologies that Volvo co-developed with parent Ford, and fellow stable-mate Mazda. The Focus and 3 small cars are sold in Australia using the same fundamental design. The sharing goes a step further in Ford's Focus XR5 hot hatch, which also uses the T5 engine. Reflecting its sporting brief, the T5 has a firmer version of the C1's MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension. It must also cope with an extra 100 kg in kerb weight, courtesy of the AWD system. This has a slight impact on performance. The six-speed manual T5 AWD is still supposed to get from 0-100 km/h in seconds. The five-speed auto takes seconds, according to Volvo. Less realistic is the official fuel consumption figure of L/100 km manual. Our experience indicates that mid to high 12s are more likely once you start exploiting the engine's potential. With premium unleaded recommended, that has to hurt the hip pocket. Range won't be that far either, as the fuel-tank capacity drops four litres to 58 litres so the rear differential can be fitted. Its driving behaviour will at least partially recompense for such inconveniences. It's not so much that T5 is outstanding in any area; more that it doesn't droop like the first-generation S40 Volvo developed with Mitsubishi. This is a direct and responsive drive. The steering is perhaps too filtered and remote, the ride quality a little harsh, and there's some front wheel slip as cornering speeds rise. But it is capable and enjoyable. This allows Volvo's distinctive five-cylinder turbo engine to shine. Although its long stroke design keeps a cap on revs, there's plentiful low- and mid-range torque to exploit. It means cog-swapping isn't a constant process, although this is one of the nicer manual gearbox and clutch combinations sampled recently. The test car's cabin ambience was not improved by a Euro-dark trim, only relieved by the occasional piece of plastic faux chrome. Space in the rear is good for adults considering this is a compact car. The boot is a little disappointing at only 404 litres. The artistic highlight of a simple, clean and well thought-out interior is undoubtedly the floating centre console that contains the audio and climate controls. Only a thin strip, it attaches at its top and bottom, leaving a gap behind it. You could call it a gimmick but it's an elegant one. Elegant is a description that suits the entire car. The T5 AWD works and plays with admirable ability, offers undoubted value and is entirely liveable. It's understated, but certainly not unimpressive. What's it got? Leather trim; alloy wheels; climate control; remote central locking; six-CD audio; bi-xenon headlights with washers; rain-sensing wipers; heated front seats; trip computer; cruise control; front and rear fog lights. What's missing? Fold-down rear armrest optional.
